Hip pain can be extremely annoying, but you can hardly imagine it before you feel it. Common causes of hip pain are muscular imbalance, joint instability, improper form or bad habits formed while overcompensating for other injuries associated with the knees or back. Fear not, though, relief is in sight! There are certain yoga exercises for hip pain that focus on postures for the hips. Not only these poses open up channels within the body, they also open the mind to a new, healthier lifestyle, and that leads to a more positive and productive life! So, get in the know so you can get in the flow!
Prior to beginning this or any other type of exercise plan, consult with your physician or a certified yoga instructor to make certain the exercises are best suited for your lifestyle, condition and body type. And never continue a pose if you feel pain. Simply surrender, and try another day. That’s the essence of yoga. Inner calm and peace. There is no place for pain in the practice of yoga.
The Cat Pose is one of the best yoga exercises for hip pain. (And requires no twisting or contortions!) It’s like “connecting the dots” because the sacrum, hips and knees are connected with the entire body. The cat pose is a great pose for beginning your practice. Place your hands and knees on the floor with your back straight. Inhale and arch your back as much as you can without causing pain. Slowly exhale, release the pose and relax. This pose feels wonderful because it gently massages and stretches the neck and back.
To counterbalance the cat pose, try the Cow Pose. Simply reverse what you did with the Cat Pose, stretching the neck and front torso, which relaxes and mobilizes the lower back and sacrum.
One of the greatest yoga exercises for hip pain is the Warrior Pose. Warrior Pose stretches the shoulders and back as well as strengthens the knees and ankles. An added benefit is that it’s an excellent remedy for neck stiffness and it tones hip fat area!
In addition to opening the hips, strengthening the back and all the other physical benefits, yoga exercises for hip pain also promote positive energy flow through the chakra channels, so you will not only feel better, you’ll be thinking more positively too!
